A Guide to Social Media Marketing For Therapists: Master Your Social Media Presence

If you've decided to take the brave step of setting up your own therapy business, you can't just sit back and hope that clients are going to come to you - it takes a lot more work than that.

Whether you're struggling to attract the right clients, or just struggling to get any clients for your new business, you're not alone! But, it might be because you're looking in the wrong places.

Today, your social media presence can be just as important as your experience. Not only does it put you out there for millions of potential clients to see, but it can also help you build your brand and establish yourself as a trusted expert in your field.

To put it bluntly, if you're not on social media, you're missing out. But, if the thought of talking to a camera or posting pictures of yourself online makes you feel a bit queasy, I'm here to guide you through the initial stages to help you get up and running.

The importance of social media marketing for therapists

There's no ignoring it, social media is super important for businesses of all shapes and sizes - even when you're a one-person therapy practice.

Do you see those accounts going viral and consistently getting millions of views? That's having a dramatic increase in sales and profits. In fact, after going viral a small clothing brand saw a 340% increase in visitors to their site and $25,000 in revenue in two weeks.

Now, it's important to remember that achieving these kinds of numbers isn't easy -- in fact, it takes a lot of work, but it is possible to replicate these achievements.

It's also obvious that things are a little more tricky for therapists, after all, we're not selling t-shirts and dresses. But, having those viral moments can really open our practice up to new audiences and bring in plenty of new clients.

The real benefit of social media for therapists is the ability to connect with potential clients, build trust, and position yourself as a leading voice in your specialization. This is great for therapists who have a certain niche or want to bring in clients from a more diverse range of backgrounds you may not already be in contact with.

Social media marketing tips for therapists

At the end of the day, we're therapists, which means we're mental health professionals, not digital marketing professionals. Coming up with a social media strategy and editing videos isn't exactly our main skillset, but it's something that we can quickly learn if it means more success for our private practice.

I know that I didn't know much about how to use social media for my business before, but now I know the value of social media content, it's become a really important part of my client attraction process.

Here are some of the main tips that I think every therapist needs to know when setting up their professional social media account. Keep reading for the basics when it comes to social media management:

Understand your target audience and your ideal therapy client

You know better than me who your ideal client is, so make sure you understand them and center all of your social media efforts around them.

Think about who you're trying to reach. How old are they? Do they have specific mental health issues or just looking for general support? Have they been to therapy before? Are they busy professionals or stay-at-home moms?

These are all things that you should have a really clear picture in your mind of before you start creating your content. The idea is that every single piece of content you make should speak directly to this client and encourage them to get in touch with you.

Choose the right social media platform

There are lots of different social media platforms out there, and I wouldn't recommend posting on all of them straight away - none of us have the time for that!

I recommend signing up for each platform, even if you don't plan to use it. This way you can secure your username and you can keep things consistent across all your platforms.

Here are the most common platforms to use:

  1. Instagram

  2. Facebook

  3. TikTok

  4. LinkedIn

  5. Pinterest

  6. X (formerly Twitter)

TikTok, Facebook and Instagram are all great for sharing video content and are also perfect for showing your personality. LinkedIn is a lot more professional, whereas Twitter and Pinterest allow for shorter-form content.

I would suggest starting with platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. All of these platforms prefer similar content so you can easily repurpose valuable content across each platform without too much extra work.

Create content that's valuable and professional

Now it's time for the fun part, creating and sharing valuable content that resonates with your target audience.

Get creative with a mix of infographics, reels, longer videos and live Q&A sessions to keep people interested in what you're putting out. Remember, it's good to have fun with your content but the end goal is to establish yourself as an expert in your field, so make sure that all your content is still professional.

Here are some content ideas to get you started:

  1. Behind the scenes: Give your followers a glimpse at what your daily life as a therapist looks like

  2. Educational videos: Short videos that explain some common topics that you go over with clients like relationship issues, anxiety etc.

  3. Interactive content: Posting polls, hosting live Q&As, or just asking your followers questions on stories can help you learn more about your audience and the type of content they want to see

Optimize your content strategy to grow your practice

Finally, once you've got a few posts up, you should start to track the performance of your content to figure out what works best and what generates the most engagement.

All of the social media platforms have their own analytics features where you can see how many people interact with your posts and it's worth keeping a note of these figures in a separate document. Then you can prioritise helpful content that works well and come up with new ideas that work well.

Over time, you'll be able to develop marketing strategies that work for you and your business.

Social media for therapists recap

Social media is hard, I totally get it, but it's SO worth putting the time and effort into your social media page now. As great as we are speaking to our clients, therapists don't want to put themselves out there online, but it's time to suck it up and try to go viral!
